Yesterday at the Bad Ischl City Museum, Wolfram Huber discussed Stefan Zweig’s relatively little-known novella, “Die spät bezahlte Schuld” (The Debt Paid Late). The writer, who visited Bad Ischl on several occasions, left behind an extensive body of literary work, from which Huber had selected this particular story.
The story centers on a doctor’s wife who retreats to a Tyrolean mountain village to escape burnout and there encounters a down-and-out old man. With great psychological insight, Zweig recounts this unusual encounter and the human depths and hopes that arise from it.
