Guided tours

The exhibition at the Hotel Austria invites visitors to explore it on their own. For those who would like to learn more, we offer guided tours of the museum on Mondays and Wednesdays through Sundays from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The Kalß Nativity Scene is one of the most significant nativity scenes in the Salzkammergut region. We look forward to showcasing it at the Hotel Austria—Museum of the City of Bad Ischl—from November 28, 2026, through February 1, 2027. In cooperation with the Ischl Heritage Association, we are also presenting a special exhibition this year featuring diorama nativity scenes from Bergamo, Italy.

Opening: Fri, Nov. 27, 2026, 5:00 p.m.
The nativity scenes will be on display during museum hours through Feb. 1, 2027.

About the diorama nativity scenes:
As part of this year’s nativity scene exhibition, 11 diorama nativity scenes by the Nativity Scene Enthusiasts of Ponte San Pietro from the Italian province of Bergamo in Lombardy will be on display. This association was founded in 1970 under the leadership of Claudio Mattei, who shares a close friendship with the Bad Goisern Nativity Scene Association.

New Piano & Cabaret Show with Roman Seeliger

Fake news or not—that is the question. In the age of artificial intelligence, which “narrative”—as it’s called in political jargon—can we still trust? To paraphrase Ferdinand Raimund’s “Hobellied”: In the end, no one believes anything.

Only one thing is certain: stand-up comedian Roman Seeliger takes the stage in person with his new musical cabaret show and even plays the piano without a stand-in. Of course, he’ll once again treat the audience to a few new musical creations.

Spread over three floors, the newly redesigned museum tells the entire history of Bad Ischl: from Roman times through the salt industry, the spa town era, and the imperial period, all the way to both world wars. The resistance during the Nazi era and the postwar years are also covered. Everything is modern, varied, and presented with great attention to detail—you won’t get bored here. And it’s all housed in the historic building where Franz Joseph and Sisi got engaged. You absolutely must take the guided tour! Ours focused on Sisi and was narrated in a knowledgeable and lively way. Be sure to set aside two hours. For us, it’s an absolute must-see in Bad Ischl!

A puzzle makes the museum visit more interesting for children. At the reception desk, visitors are greeted by a friendly staff member. The exhibition at Hotel Austria expands on our "Sehnsucht Salzkammergut" catalog, which offers exciting insights into the history of the region. The new catalog for the Lehárvilla will be published in July 2025 with the title "In Ischl I always have the best ideas. Franz Lehár's summer resort villa on the Traun".

Tours outside of regular opening hours are available for groups upon request.

The Lehárvilla will be closed on December 8, December 24, December 25, December 26, December 31, and January 1.
