Rediscovered: Franz Lehár’s earliest recordings from 1901
Lecture by Kai-Uwe Garrels
In 1901, before his career as an operetta composer began, Franz Lehár, serving as a military bandmaster, conducted “his” 26th Infantry Regiment “Grand Duke Michael” for eleven early record recordings. This series of shellac records has survived in its entirety for over 125 years, even though it was long unknown that the master of operetta had left behind his earliest recordings here. Kai-Uwe Garrels, who rediscovered these rarities, presents these acoustic time capsules with insights into music, media, and contemporary history.
